Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Computer Operator - Media & Tape Library is responsible for the care, control, and management of magnetic computer tapes and removable media (including NAS and USB disks) within the Houston Tape Library. This role serves as the primary point of accountability for media inventory, verification of client deliverables, database accuracy, and routine maintenance of the tape library. The position works closely with Computer Operations, DMS users, and IT teams to ensure reliable, secure, and compliant media operations.

Principal Responsibilities (Database & Media Management)

  1. Serve as the primary individual responsible for projects and initiatives within the tape library.
  2. Act as the main point of contact for the xmittal (transmittal) program.
  3. Coordinate and manage all tape pools, including creation, expansion, reduction, and labeling of media.
  4. Perform final verification of all disks and tapes prior to outgoing client shipments.
  5. Register and document all incoming media in the appropriate tracking systems.
  6. Resolve media catalog issues for users and archive personnel.
  7. Manage media error reporting, including identification and flagging of media with soft and hard errors in the catalog.
  8. Coordinate daily operational and media requirements with Computer Operators supporting the tape library silos.
  9. Generate media inventory, usage, and exception reports as required by DMS and IT Data Processing.
  10. Coordinate activities to locate, track, and retrieve media through database searches.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; College Degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience as a tape technician, media operator, or computer operations professional.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong understanding of tape library operations and media lifecycle management
  • Proficient computer skills with working knowledge of databases
  • Familiarity with MMS tape management systems
  • Highly organized, disciplined, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively under time constraints
  • Capable of training and supporting backup personnel
