- 0-2 years of experience (training provided).
- Ability to stand for 7.25 hours; lift up to 50 lbs.; kneel, bend, stoop, reach outward and overhead; climb stairs and ladders; push rolls of newsprint; and operate heavy equipment with four levels of moving parts.
- High School Diploma/GED or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with strong decision-making skills.
- Good color perception and mechanical aptitude.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Previous experience in a production environment, preferably cold web offset newspaper printing.
- Distribution/mail packaging experience preferred, including conveyor lines and stacking/strapping equipment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with business PC applications and press controls.
- Proficient in Microsoft applications, email, and Google Suite.
- Availability to work 24-30 hours per week, every Sunday and Friday plus two additional weekdays.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in multiple manufacturing areas within the nightly printing plant operation, including the Press, Plate, and Mail rooms.
- Perform Reel Room duties such as roll handling, roll preparation, paster make-up, reel stand operation, tension system settings, web leading, and sorting and weighing waste newsprint.
- Perform Mailroom duties including list preparation, MCS programming, operation of labeling equipment, stackers, bundle strapping and wrapping machines, conveyors, error bundle correction, and proper dispatching of printed copies.
- Perform Pressroom duties including web leading; cleaning blankets, rollers, press parts, and systems; and checking, spotting, mounting, and removing plates.
- Operate PC-based imaging and press proof software applications in the Plateroom.
- Image and process plates and verify registration.
- Inspect plates to ensure they are defect-free and verify printed copies for accuracy and quality.
- Communicate and monitor pre-press communications via electronic messaging or phone for critical runtime information and relay updates to management.
- Operate production information management system software (PDIMS) to record nightly runtime data, including film and plate lockup times, and track consumables.
- Assist with cleaning, scheduled preventative maintenance of equipment, and general housekeeping.
- Perform transportation-related tasks, including printing reports, top wraps, and labels; creating and distributing circulation reports (hard copy and electronic); and preparing postal reports.
